,I wrote a children’s book about a little monkey who went to the dentist. When I sent out the manuscript to several friends a couple asked how the monkey came to be living with his human parents. I thought about that and decided to write a book about the little guy getting adopted. I wrote the story and then reached out to a new set of friends, ones that had gone through the adoption process. Those friends helped with a couple of key points, like the fear both child and parent have of not measuring up to expectations. Through a variety of animals in the book I show the fear of wondering if MP will fit in with his new family. Some have taken exception to the fact I used a chimpanzee in place of a child and that he was adopted by human parents. It was not my intention to upset anyone. My honest intention then and now was to show love and acceptance. I've added some illustrations from the book along with the text, to help you judge for yourself.
He liked playing with his friends but he couldn’t wait to meet his new parents. Mr. Ramirez came into the room where MP was waiting and told him that his new parents would be here soon. “Now remember MP, They may not look like you. They may not look anything like you think they should, but they will love you and take care of you, and make sure you grow up big and strong.”
MP knew his new parents would love him, but he had not thought about the way they would look. Now, as he waited, his very big imagination made him wonder what his new parents would look like and more importantly what they would want him to look and act like. What if he, and his parents were different? Would that matter? Would they love him for who he was or would his new parents want him to be like them?
MP Chimpanzee, Adoption Day is a story of acceptance. It is MP's adoption day and he is suddenly afraid of how he will fit in with his new parents. While he wants to belong, what if their differences prevent him from being happy? After some imaginative worries, MP is thrilled when he meets his new mom and dad who promise to love him forever.
